How Green is Your Landscape?

Well thought out landscaping can not only increase your home’s curb appeal, but it can also help you to save on your energy costs. The US Department of Energy estimates that, on average, landscaping for energy efficiency can provide you with enough energy savings to pay back your initial investment in less than 8 years.
Everyone is aware that trees can provide much needed shade in warmer months & allow sunlight to filter through during colder months. Did you know that planting shrubs close to your house can provide added insulation as it creates a dead space, sheltering the home from sunlight in summer & from wind in winter? You can also save energy (and increase the life of your air conditioning unit) when you shade the outside coil by planting a shading tree close by or by building a trellis over it–be sure to allow ample room for air to circulate freely.
